ECE is a certificate Programme, which provide the fundamental
knowledge and skills needed to work effectively with young children.
Academic courses are combined with field placements, which enable
students to gain an understanding of children’s physical,
emotional, and cognitive, needs.
In lectures, discussion groups
and workshops, students develop skills in the following:

Child Growth and Development Theories and Practices of ECE program
skills, health, safety and Nutrition. The Child in Society Interacting
with families, mentoring.

The practicum placements enable students
to demonstrate their competency in these areas through direct
involvement with children
under the guidance of qualified teachers. Students will assess
the children’s strengths and needs, guide their behaviour
and design and implement curriculum in the pre school environment.
Course Objectives:
- Examine the major theories and issues oft child development
and early care and education
- Identify and describe general development principles
and major milestones of children from infancy through age eight
years in the following areas: physical, social, emotional, language
and cognitive development
- Describe the historic development of the field of early care
and education and explain the importance of a historical perspective
- Demonstrate knowledge of developmentally appropriate practice
in the acquisition, arrangement and supervision of resources, equipment
and supplies for effective earning environment
- Explain the importance of observing and recording children’s’ behaviour
and demonstrate competency in observation, recording and using
the records for planning
- Identify and demonstrate ways adults can support
the socialization process in children and the resolution of conflict
between children in the early childhood classroom
- Demonstrate an understanding of the definition and process
of curriculum development for young children, including identifying
characteristics of outstanding curricula
- Describe the need for and benefits of parent involvement
and demonstrate techniques for establishing and maintaining an
effective
home school partnership
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of ongoing
professional development and begin a professional resource file
Practice Field Work: Field experience and practicum will enhance growth and evaluate
growth progress. Visits to various primary and pre-primary schools,
excursions, students are assigned to work in a selected field experience
job, which is appropriate for their program of study and their
level of readiness to enter the world of work.
Eligibility for the course:
Candidates with H.S.C qualification and working teachers with genuine
interest, aptitude and personality will be preferred. There will
be written test and interview of all the candidates by the selection
committee. Candidates will be selected on the joint performance
of their academic background, test result and interview. All
College lectures, lessons, assignments and the other work will
be in ENGLISH
